Bridge End Pedigree Holsteins

The focus is on milk production from elite females at Bridge End Holsteins, run by Colin and Yvonne Dent and their son Mark in the lush pastures of Cumbria's Eden Valley at Kirkby Thore, near Penrith.

Herd numbers have risen threefold in the last decade to 800 cows in milk with a total of 920 animals in the herd and at the same time the Dent family and their team have increased yields to more than 10,000 litres a head on three times a day milking from high genetic merit females.

Surplus heifers and embryos are always for sale.

Management

Health is also uppermost in the management of the herd and Colin and Mark are heavily involved with the day to day running of the cattle while Yvonne takes care of the heifer calves which are housed outdoors in hutches.

Cows are split into three groups, high yielders housed all the year round, the lower yielding in calf cows and dry cows, and fed a TMR ration which includes whole crop and grass silage on the 1000 acre farm.

The herd is calved all the year round and optimum numbers are likely to be around 750 milkers with 900 cows in the herd.
